Bihar YouTuber Arrested For Slapping Train Passenger For Social Media Fame

A man who slapped a random passenger onboard a train at Bihar's Anugraha Narayan Road railway station and recorded the entire act for online fame has finally been taught a lesson. The culprit, identified as Ritesh Kumar, stood at the railway platform and waited for the train to roll away before going near it and slapping an unsuspecting passenger. All this while, his friend recorded the act to be posted on social media.

As the video clip went viral, social media users reacted negatively and demanded the authorities to take action against Kumar. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) sprung into action and apprehended Kumar, who was directed to release an apology.

"No compromise on passenger security!! A YouTuber who slapped a passenger on a moving train for social media fame has been tracked & arrested by RPF Dehri-on-Sone!" RPF said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

"Your safety matters to us-reckless acts will not be tolerated."

Meanwhile, Kumar in the apology video admitted his mistake, stating that he wanted to increase his followers by staging such a video.

"I am a YouTuber. I make and post videos on Instagram to increase my followers. I came to Anugraha Narayan Road railway station and, to boost my follower count, slapped a passenger on a moving train," said Kumar.

"This was my mistake, and I won't repeat it. Please forgive me," he added.

Social media reacts

Reacting to the news of Kumar's arrest, social media users applauded RPF for taking action and demanded that all vandals be punished similarly.

"Good job RPF. Such vandals should be taught a lesson," said one user while another added: "Without harsh punishment they will never going to learn. Fine them huge amount."

A third commented: "I hope all those who vandalised trains will be tracked down, arrested and given exemplary punishment too. No one has the right to damage public property."

NASA Supercomputer Finds Spiral Structure in the Oort Cloud’s Inner Region

An unexpected spiral structure has been identified at the edge of the solar system, potentially altering current understanding of the Oort Cloud. This discovery has emerged from a computational model developed using data from comets and gravitational influences. The Oort Cloud, a distant shell of icy bodies, has long remained an enigma due to its extreme distance from Earth. The latest findings suggest that its inner regions may form a spiral-like pattern, offering a fresh perspective on the cloud's composition and dynamics.

Findings from New Research

According to a study published on the preprint server arXiv, the Oort Cloud, previously thought to be a spherical shell of icy debris, may actually exhibit a structure akin to a spiral disk. The research, led by astronomer David Nesvorný and his team at the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado, utilised simulations run on NASA's Pleiades supercomputer to generate a model of the Oort Cloud's inner structure. The findings indicate that gravitational forces from the Milky Way, including interactions with stars and black holes, may have shaped the Oort Cloud into a more intricate form than previously assumed.

Galactic Influences and Structural Implications

As per the study, the phenomenon of galactic tide plays a significant role in shaping the Oort Cloud. This force, which originates from the collective gravitational influence of the Milky Way, is particularly strong on objects residing in the outermost parts of the solar system. The newly proposed model suggests that the Oort Cloud's inner section, spanning between 1,000 and 10,000 astronomical units (AU), forms a spiral structure stretching approximately 15,000 AU. This challenges previous theories that depicted the Oort Cloud as a relatively uniform and isotropic region.

Challenges in Direct Observation

As reported, due to its vast distance from Earth, the Oort Cloud remains nearly impossible to observe directly. Even NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft, travelling at a speed of 1.6 million kilometres per day, is expected to take another 300 years to reach its boundary and around 300,000 years to pass through it completely. Researchers suggest that tracking long-period comets or detecting faint reflected light from the Oort Cloud's icy bodies may be the best approach to confirm the newly proposed structure.

Future Investigations

Scientists believe further observational studies and refined computational models could help verify the presence of this spiral pattern. Understanding the true shape and composition of the Oort Cloud is crucial for comprehending the origins of comets and the solar system's early formation. While current resources are not yet dedicated to such observations, researchers indicate that further exploration of this distant region could provide valuable insights into the broader workings of our cosmic neighbourhood.

MS Dhoni's IPL Future Confirmed? Cryptic Message Sets Internet On Fire

Former Indian cricket team skipper MS Dhoni has sent the internet into frenzy with a cryptic message over his Indian Premier League (IPL) future. Ahead of IPL 2025, he arrived in Chennai to join his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) teammates but it is his t-shirt that has become the topic of discussion among fans. The internet believes that the t-shirt contained a cryptic message that hinted towards IPL 2025 being his final season in the competition. Fans took to social media to decode the message on the t-shirt and a number of them believed that it was a Morse Code that translated to - "One last time".

Earlier, Dhoni said it takes a lot of hard work to be fit and ready for two months of IPL.

"I only play a couple of months in a year, but I want to enjoy it the way I started playing, that's something that keeps me going," Dhoni said at Garuda Aerospace's 'Ascend' during the launch of Amaran Drone and Land Mine Detection Drone, here on Friday.

"But, of course, for that, I need to put in a lot of hard work for six to eight months because IPL is one of the toughest tournaments. Nobody really cares about how old you are. If you're playing at this level, the level needs to be the same," he added.

Dhoni said playing for the country was his biggest motivation in his career coming from a state, which isn't known for the sport.

"When I started playing international cricket, for me the biggest motivation was representing my country," he said.

"It has always been the country for me because coming from where I came, not known for cricket as a state, once I got a chance I wanted to contribute, I wanted to be part of a winning team that was trying to win each and every game, you're trying to win the big tournaments, the bilateral series (and) so (on).

"For me, my biggest motivation was that contribution to make India win. Now that I've retired from international cricket, I can't say it's the same, but for me now, it's the love for the sport," he added.

Out On Bail, Man Rapes Pune Woman Inside Bus 100 Metres From Police Station

Dattatraya Ramdas Gade, the man allegedly responsible for the rape of a 26-year-old woman in Pune, is a history sheeter, who was out on bail, the police have said. A manhunt is on in the city since the young woman reported the rape earlier today. The police have pressed in eight teams and sniffer dogs.

Gade has at least six cases of theft, robbery and chain-snatching registered against him in Pune and adjoining Ahilyanagar district. Arrested for a robbery, he has been out on bail snice 2019, reported news agency Press Trust of India quoting un-named officials.

Cases were registered against him in Shikrapur and Shirur police station limits in Pune district. He also faces cases in Ahilyanagar district. As late as last year, a theft case was lodged against him in Pune.

A Pune police team has already questioned his brother to know his whereabouts.

The rape took place at Swargate bus stand, one of the busiest in the city. Today, when Gade tricked the woman into the empty bus, locked its door and assaulted her, there have been people around, the police had said.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Smartana Patil, has told reporters that CCTV footage showed the woman walking towards the bus with the accused. In fact, the police identified him from the footage. There were many people and several buses on the station premises when the incident took place, she said.

The woman had been waiting for a bus for Phaltan in Satara district around 5.45 am. The accused, according to MSRTC officials, had taken her to the empty bus claiming to be its conductor. When she pointed out the bus was empty, he said it had people inside who were sleeping.

After the assault, the woman took a bus for her hometown and narrated the incident to her friend on phone while on way, the police said. On her friend's advice, she got off the bus and went to the police to report the matter.

The MSRTC is one of the three public transport bodies in the country, with a fleet of more than 14,000 buses. Every day, more than 55 lakh passengers travel by its buses.

Maha Kumbh To Wind Up Today After Holy Dip For Shiv Ratri

  1. So far, a record 63.36 crore people from every echelon of society   have taken the holy dip at Prayagraj's Triveni Sangam - the meeting point of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the long-lost Saraswati.
  2. Huge arrangements have been made for today's dip that will begin before dawn and ring down the curtains on the festival that takes place every 12 years. .
  3. Since Monday, crowds started swelling at the mela grounds for the final "Amrit Snan" that will begin in the early hours.
  4. The government has taken comprehensive measures that include efficient crowd management, enhanced sanitation and adequate medical facilities.
  5. This is complemented by elaborate arrangements for security, transportation and emergency response systems.
  6. The extra focus on arrangements came after the January 26 stampede on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, in which more than 30 people died and more than 60 were injured.
  7. It sparked a massive political slugfest that saw most leaders of the Opposition and the BJP joining the fray.
  8. As the Opposition repeatedly targeted the government, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accused them of denigrating religion and culture. PM Modi said it showed a "slave mentality".
  9. The other big controversy was over reports that suggested that water at the Sangam contained fecal coliform bacteria and was not fit for bathing. Yogi Adityanath issued a denial, accusing critics of spreading misinformation.
  10. Kumbh, mentioned first in Rig Veda, the oldest Hindu scripture, means a pitcher. The story goes that drops of amrit, the nectar of immortality, had spilled when it was brought up by gods and demons through churning the cosmic ocean. A bath in the rivers at these spots under the right constellations is believed to wash off all sins.

AI Set To Replace Humans In 4,000 Roles In Southeast Asia's Largest Bank

DBS, Singapore's largest bank, has announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 4,000 roles over the next three years. This move is driven by the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, which will assume responsibilities currently handled by human employees.

The affected positions will primarily consist of temporary and contract staff, with the reduction in workforce resulting from natural attrition as projects are completed. Notably, permanent staff will not be impacted by these cuts.

According to DBS's outgoing CEO, Piyush Gupta, the bank expects to create around 1,000 new job opportunities related to AI. This development makes DBS one of the first major banks to provide insight into the effects of AI on its operations. However, the company has not disclosed the number of jobs that will be cut in Singapore specifically.

A DBS spokesperson elaborated on the workforce reduction, stating, "Over the next three years, we envisage that AI could reduce the need to renew about 4,000 temporary/contract staff across our 19 markets working on specific projects". The spokesperson continued, "As such, we expect the reduction in workforce will come from natural attrition as these temporary and contract roles are completed over the next few years."

Currently, DBS employs between 8,000 and 9,000 temporary and contract workers, in addition to its total workforce of around 41,000 people. Last year, Gupta revealed that DBS had been investing in AI technologies for over a decade. He noted, "We today deploy over 800 AI models across 350 use cases, and expect the measured economic impact of these to exceed S$1bn ($745m; £592m) in 2025".

As Gupta prepares to leave the firm at the end of March, current Deputy CEO Tan Su Shan is set to succeed him. The increasing prevalence of AI technology has sparked intense debate about its benefits and risks. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that AI is likely to affect nearly 40% of all jobs worldwide. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva cautioned that "in most scenarios, AI will likely exacerbate overall inequality."

Canada's New Visa Rules May Become A Nightmare For Indian Students, Workers

Canada's latest steps to curb migration is likely to have an adverse effect on tens of thousands of foreign students, including those from India. It will also negatively impact those who apply for work and resident permits.

These new rules have come into effect from the beginning of February and give unhindered powers to Canadian border officials to alter the visa status of students, workers, and migrants at any time should they deem such action necessary.

Under the new Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, Canadian border personnel are now vested with the powers to deny or reject temporary resident documents such as electronic travel authorisations or eTAs and temporary resident visas or TRVs.

This means that border officials can now cancel such documents, which include work permits and student visas. However, there are some guidelines which need to be met in order for them to reject permits and visas. This includes one which states that if an officer is not convinced that the individual will leave Canada upon the expiration of their authorised stay, they can reject their entry or cancel their permit even during their stay in Canada.

The discretionary powers to make such judgement is entirely vested upon the officer.

These new rules and regulations have a scope of uncertainty, and will potentially impact tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of international students and workers - of which Indians are the largest group of foreign nationals in either category.

Canada is among the most preferred destination for Indian students, workers, and legal migrants. Students alone, currently pursuing their higher education in Canada, account for more than 4.2 lakh Indian nationals as per government data.

Should a student, worker, or migrant get rejected, they will be stopped at the port of entry and sent back to their home country. In case a permit is cancelled while such a person is already studying, working, or residing in Canada, they will be served a notice to leave the country by a specified date.

Besides these categories, Canada also sees a massive inflow of tourists from India - all of whom also have temporary permits of different duration of stay. In the first six months of 2024, Canada issued travel visas to more than 3.6 lakh Indians. In 2023 too, Indians accounted for 3.4 lakh tourists in the first six months of the year as per data released by the Canadian authorities.

Those who will be impacted shall receive a notification by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada via email as well as their IRCC account. There is no clarity regarding what will happen to the money invested or already paid by such persons - be it towards their education or loans, mortgages or rent paid by workers during their stay in case of a sudden cancellation.

Just three months earlier - in November 2024, Canada had closed down the Student Direct Stream or SDS visa program - a preferred route for Indian students who were willing to guarantee money upfront to be assured of their education in the North American country.

Rape Survivor Faces Horror Again In Bengaluru Hotel, Cop Arrested

A 17-year-old rape survivor was allegedly raped by a police constable at a Bengaluru hotel, officials said on Monday.

The incident took place in December, when constable Arun asked the survivor to meet her at a hotel on the pretext of helping her.

According to officials, the teen initially befriended Vicky, who allegedly raped her on a false promise of marriage. Vicky also assaulted the girl.

The survivor's mother filed a complaint with Bommanahalli police, but Arun befriended the accused.

The constable assured justice to the girl and also promised to find her a job. He allegedly called her to a hotel, where he mixed sedatives in a liquor bottle and forced her to consume it. Arun then raped the survivor and threatened to circulate her private videos if she disclosed the incident to anyone, the officials said.

Both Arun and Vicky have been arrested and charged under various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The accused have been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

Liquor Ban In J&K? Signature Campaign, Posters, Spark Massive Row

Jammu and Kashmir is seeing a fresh political row over liquor ban - an issue that came up in 2016 but got thumbs downed by Mehbooba Mufti's ruling People's Democratic Party. Now the battlelines have been re-drawn, with the PDP spearheading the demand for a ban. The party has started a signature campaign in support of the ban and it is the ruling National Conference that is accusing it of hypocrisy.
Over the weekend, posters came up across Srinagar, supporting the ban and calling upon tourists to "respect local culture and traditions". Police action to remove the posters has been questioned by the Opposition.

The matter is expected to dominate the assembly in the budget session which begins on March 3. Two members - one of the PDP and one from the National Conference -- have submitted bills to ban liquor.

PDP's Fayaz Ahamd Mir, National Conference's Ahsan Pardesi and a third MLA -- Awami Ittehad Party's (AIP) Sheikh Khursheed Ahmad - have moved separate bills in the assembly seeking ban on sale of liquor in the Union Territory.

Today PDP leader and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti  joined the signature campaign that was  launched by her daughter  Iltija Mufti yesterday.

A day before, on Friday, traders at Srinagar's historic Lal Chowk had put up posters that, after welcoming tourists, said, "For a memorable and enjoyable trip, we kindly request: Love and cherish your family, avoid liquor, drugs, spitting on roads and smoking. Respect our culture and traditions".

NC MLA, Ahsan Pardesi said, in support of his bill, that the unchecked sale of alcohol disregards the religious and cultural ethos of Kashmir.

"Our heritage has always stood against intoxicants, and this bill is a step toward preserving those values," he added.

Kashmir - heavily dependent on tourism -- has always been cosmopolitan in its hospitality. The first liquor shop in the Valley dates back to the British era. Since then, liquor shops have functioned in Kashmir, but as terror broke out in the Valley in the 1990s, Islamist terrorist groups banned the sale of liquor.

The ruling National Conference has said it is pro-choice and would prefer to leave it to tourists to decide whether they wanted a tipple or not.

"Not Coming Here": Sanjana Ganesan's Chat With BAN Star Over Bumrah Viral

A funny interaction between cricket presenter Sanjana Ganesan and Bangladesh's Mehidy Hasan Miraz is going viral on social media. During the chat, the duo talked about India's right-arm pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is also the husband of Sanjana.  "He is very different bowler and very dangerous," said Mehidy in the video. To this, the presenter replied, "He is not coming here." Then Mehidy said, "Yeah, I know. We are very happy." The Bangladesh star then asked about how Bumrah was doing. "He is okay. He is training at the NCA," said Sanjana.

Notably, Bumrah is not a part of India's squad for the ongoing Champions Trophy due to a back injury he suffered during the fifth and final Test in Australia in January this year.

India talisman pacer Bumrah had recently shared a picture of him hitting the gym after being ruled out of the ICC event. Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had released a statement to confirm Bumrah's absence from the tournament.

"Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men's Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah's replacement," BCCI had stated.

In his recent post, Bumrah had taken to Instagram and shared a picture from inside a gym. "Rebuilding" was the caption of the post.

https://ift.tt/3bd510a

Bumrah has been missing from on-field action since January. His last appearance was in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Sydney.

After bowling 10.1 overs in the first innings, the A-Lister was visibly in discomfort and went for scans. He was advised by the Australian doctors not to participate in the remainder of the Sydney Test. He came out to bat in the second innings but didn't take up his duties with the ball.

Talking about Champions Trophy 2025, the eight-team tournament is featuring 15 matches and will be played across Pakistan and Dubai. The ICC Champions Trophy from February 19 to March 9 is being hosted by Pakistan and UAE, with India playing its matches in Dubai under a hybrid model.

The biggest match of the ICC tournament between two arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, will be played on February 23. India will started their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20. India's last league match will be against New Zealand on March 2.

India's squad for ICC Champions Trophy, 2025: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohd. Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakaravarthy.

Non Travelling substitutes: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube. The three players will travel to Dubai as and when required.

New Fossils Suggest Land Life Bounced Back Faster Than Expected After End-Permian Mass Extinction

Fossil evidence has indicated that land ecosystems rebounded more quickly than previously thought after the end-Permian mass extinction, which occurred approximately 252 million years ago. The extinction event, known as the most severe in Earth's history, led to the loss of over 80% of marine species and 70 percent of terrestrial species. Reports suggest that tropical riparian ecosystems, found along rivers and wetlands, demonstrated resilience by recovering within a shorter timeframe than earlier estimates, which ranged from seven to ten million years.

Sediment and Fossil Analysis Supports Findings

According to a study published in eLife, sediment and fossil records from the Heshanggou Formation in North China have provided evidence of a faster-than-expected recovery. Researchers examined sedimentary deposits from lakes and rivers, focusing on plant remains, vertebrate fossils, and trace fossils such as burrows and footprints. The research team, led by Dr. Li Tian, Associate Researcher at the State Key Laboratory of Biogeology and Environmental Geology at China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, analysed fossil samples spanning the Early Triassic period, approximately 252 to 247 million years ago.

Findings indicated that at the onset of the Early Triassic, only a few species dominated the landscape, with significantly smaller organisms compared to pre-extinction life. The data pointed to a harsh environment with limited biodiversity. Fossils from the Spathian stage, around 249 million years ago, showed an increase in plant stems, root traces, and burrowing activity, suggesting the reestablishment of stable ecosystems. The presence of medium-sized carnivorous vertebrates was also recorded, indicating the formation of multi-level food webs.

Burrowing Behaviour Signals Ecosystem Stability

Burrowing activity, which had largely disappeared following the extinction event, was noted as a key indicator of recovery. Reports state that burrowing plays a critical role in soil aeration and nutrient cycling, facilitating ecosystem stability. The resurgence of this behaviour suggests that certain species adapted to environmental stresses by seeking refuge underground.

Senior author Jinnan Tong, Principal Investigator at the State Key Laboratory of Biogeology and Environmental Geology, stated to phys.org that tropical riparian zones may have functioned as ecological refuges, providing stable conditions that allowed life to rebound faster than in drier inland areas. Further research is expected to determine whether similar patterns of recovery occurred in other regions during the Early Triassic.

Ganga Water At Kumbh's Sangam Unsafe On Another Parameter Too: Data

The Ganga water at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, where lakhs of people are taking a holy dip every day during the ongoing Maha Kumbh, is currently unsafe for bathing as it exceeds the prescribed limit for biological oxygen demand (BOD), a key parameter to determine water quality, according to government data.

BOD refers to the amount of oxygen required by aerobic microorganisms to break down organic material in a water body. A higher BOD level indicates more organic content in the water.

River water is considered fit for bathing if the BOD level is less than 3 milligrams per litre.

The Central Pollution Control Board recently told the National Green Tribunal that several locations in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj do not conform to the primary water quality standards for bathing with respect to faecal coliform levels.

However, it said that the river water quality met the bathing criteria in terms of BOD after January 13 "due to freshwater intrusion at upstream locations." Government data shows that the river water at Sangam is currently exceeding the safe limit for BOD as well.

The BOD level at Sangam was 5.09 milligrams per litre at 5 am on February 16. It was recorded at 4.6 milligrams per litre at 5 pm on February 18 and 5.29 milligrams per litre at 8 am on February 19 (Wednesday).

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the BOD level at Sangam was 3.94 milligrams per litre on January 13 when the Maha Kumbh started.

It improved to 2.28 milligrams per litre on Makar Sankranti (January 14) and further dropped to 1 milligram per litre on January 15.

However, it rose to 4.08 milligrams per litre on January 24 and was recorded at 3.26 milligrams per litre on Mauni Amavasya (January 29). According to Uttar Pradesh government officials, 10,000 to 11,000 cusecs of water is being released into the Ganga to ensure it meets bathing standards.

The Maha Kumbh, which started on January 13, will conclude on February 26, Maha Shivaratri day. Over 54 crore people have taken a dip in the sacred waters of Triveni Sangam so far.

Mahakumbh Nagar is the world's largest temporary city, accommodating 50 lakh to 1 crore devotees at any given time.

These pilgrims generate at least 16 million litres of faecal waste and 240 million litres of greywater daily from activities like cooking, washing, and bathing.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh told reporters on Sunday that the rise in footfall is due to the government's success in improving river water quality and sanitation since the 2019 Ardh Kumbh.

"Before 2019, there would be no toilets at Kumbh. Officials would earmark an area with a red flag, provide tents, and open defecation used to take place.

"For the first time in 2019, we built 1.14 lakh individual toilets with Sintex (plastic) tanks underneath to collect wastewater and excreta. Desludging would be done every two-three days and the faecal sludge would be taken to open oxidation ponds far away. This time, we have constructed 1.5 lakh individual toilets and two faecal sludge treatment plants," he said.

A 200 km-long temporary drainage network has been set up to connect treatment facilities, Singh added.

"Sanitation is a big hallmark (of Kumbh arrangements), and those who have been to Kumbh previously can distinctly see the difference," he said.

Himanshu Thakkar, coordinator of the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers, and People (SANDRP), said the state government has been highly irresponsible in claiming that no harm has come to people who have bathed in the river, despite the water being unfit for bathing.

"It is the government's moral duty to provide clean water for bathing. When the water is not safe, there is always a high risk of infection," he said.

"She Sensed Bad Touch": Court Refuses To Cancel Ex Army Officer's Jail Term

The Bombay High Court has refused to cancel a court martial order sentencing a former Lieutenant Colonel to five years' imprisonment for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, noting she was well aware of the "bad touch".

The girl's demonstration in court regarding the specific manner in which the accused behaved with her once her father left the room was depicted with immense clarity, a division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale said on Monday.

The bench dismissed a petition filed by the accused, challenging the January 2024 order passed by the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) confirming the five-year imprisonment imposed on him by the General Court Martial (GCM).

In March 2021, the GCM of the Army held him guilty for committing aggravated sexual assault on a minor girl and sexual harassment under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

He was sentenced to the minimum punishment of five years' imprisonment.

The former Army officer in his plea in the High Court claimed he had no ill intention and that he touched the girl and asked for a kiss only out of "grandfatherly/fatherly" love for the child.

The high court, however, refused to accept this contention and said the victim girl's instinct of identifying a bad touch of the accused must be believed.

The victim in her statement before the GCM has totally denied the suggestion that the accused had not touched her with any bad intent and that it was in the nature of a touch of a parent or grandfather, the High Court said.

The girl met the accused for the very first time and there was no reason for him to hold her hand even under the pretext of reading her palm, touch her thigh and request to kiss her, the court said.

"The girl immediately sensed a bad touch and reported as such to her father instantly. In view of this deposition, we are unable to take issues and dissent with the findings of either the GCM or the AFT," the High Court bench said.

The high court said it has not found any error with the findings of the GCM and the AFT.

"We do not find any violation of fundamental rights of the petitioner. There is no infirmity in the decision-making process in arriving at the impugned finding by both the GCM and AFT," the bench said.

In his plea, the accused claimed there has been a violation of his fundamental rights as the GCM has not appreciated the evidence in the case properly.

As per the complaint, the accused in February 2020 touched the thigh of the girl, the daughter of an army havildar (constable), and asked for a kiss from her.

The havildar had brought his daughter and younger son to the accused's room when he asked to meet them.

The girl immediately called her father and informed him of the incident, after which a complaint was lodged.

The HC noted that the victim has narrated the incident consistently before the GCM, and said her demonstration in court regarding the specific manner in which the accused behaved with her once her father left the room was depicted with immense clarity.

Woman Loses Rs 4.3 Crore, Becomes Homeless, Trying To Find Love Online

A woman based in Perth has been forced to live homeless after losing over Rs 4.3 crore ($780,000) in life savings to scammers while searching for love online. According to a report in news.com.au, Annette Ford, 57, is now couch-surfing in Western Australia and hoping to secure housing at an affordable retirement village as the scammers remain free.

Ms Ford joined the dating pool after her 33-year-long marriage ended in 2018 and her ex-husband moved on quickly. Looking to seek a love life of her own, she joined a dating site called "Plenty of Fish" where she started talking to a man named 'William'.

Over the course of several months, the stranger managed to win Ms Ford's trust before asking her for money. 'Wlliam' said he needed Rs 2,75,000 ($5000) as his wallet had been stolen in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

"He said he had been mugged outside the site he was working on (in Kuala Lumpur) and they took his wallet and his cards," said Ms Ford.

"The next thing I know he's in hospital and I'm being landed with a $5000 hospital payable to an Australian doctor. I (paid) that. Then there was a hotel bill, and he said he couldn't pay the workers on the site because he didn't have access to his cards."

The requests for money continued and by the time Ms Ford suspected she had been scammed, she was out of Rs 1.6 crore ($300,000), having drained her self-managed super fund. Despite reporting the case to the Australian Federal Police, Ms Ford did not hear anything back.

The second scam

Four years later, Ms Ford came across another scammer -- this time on Facebook who went by the name, 'Nelson'. The stranger told her that he lived in Amsterdam and had a friend in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who needed $2500 to help with an ongoing investigation.

Aware of the danger, she refused initially but the stranger told her to deposit money he sent to her into a Bitcoin ATM. Ms Ford said there was money going in and out of her account that she wasn't aware of and before she could realise it, her account was out of Rs 1.5 crore ($280,000).

Having lost everything, Ms Ford is now begging Australians to not fall prey to such scams. "They say all the right things, they sweep you off your feet but they're going to take your money and they're going to leave you broke," Ms Ford warned.

Last month, a British woman was swindled of Rs 98.5 lakh (£92,300) after a friend of two decades, ran a catfish scam against her.

Gyanesh Kumar Appointed New Chief Election Commissioner

Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the senior of the two election commissioners after Chief Election Commission Rajiv Kumar, will succeed him, the government announced late this evening. As the next Chief Election Commissioner, he would be in charge of elections in five states - Opposition-ruled Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and NDA-ruled Bihar and Assam -- in the immediate future. The election in Bihar is due later this year - the rest take place in 2026.

Mr Kumar, who will stay in the post January 26, 2029 -- will altogether steer the Commission through 20 Assembly elections, elections for President and Vice-President in 2027, and preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha election.

The announcement came shortly after a meeting of the Election Committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, where the Congress leader had given a note of dissent.

Mr Kumar, a 1988-batch IAS officer from Kerala cadre, was part of the Union Home Ministry and helped draft the bill that scrapped Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. He is known to be close to Mr Shah.

The Congress objected to the selection as the law on appointment of the Chief Election Commission has been challenged in the Supreme Court, which will hear the matter on Saturday. The party has alleged that the government wants control of Election Commission and is not concerned about its credibility.

The government, sources said, did not want to postpone the selection process as it would leave a vacancy in the poll commission. The court had not stayed the appointment and legal opinion was sought before making the move, sources said.

Before parliament formed a law on the matter in 2023, the Chief Election Commissioner was appointed by the President of India on the advice of the Prime Minister. Traditionally, the seniormost of the two remaining Election commissioners gets the job.

Under the Chief Election Commissioner And Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service And Term of Office) Act, 2023, a committee headed by the law minister has to shortlist five candidates and the selection team - the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and a cabinet minister -- has to make the final selection.

But the parliamentary law had set aside the Supreme Court's guideline that made the Chief Justice of India a part of the selection committee. The replacement of the CJI with a cabinet minister has been challenged in court, with petitioners alleging that it interfered with the balance of power in the committee and affected its neutrality.

50 Film Stars, Industrialists, Diplomats Invited For BJP's Delhi Oath Event

The new Chief Minister of Delhi will take oath at the iconic Ramlila Maidan on Thursday in a grand ceremony that will be attended by BJP leaders and ministers and all the allies. Sources said plans are in progress to make the party's return to power in the national capital after 26 years a truly memorable event.

The ceremony will begin at 4.30 pm.

A colourful musical programme will be held on the stage of Ramlila Maidan before the swearing-in ceremony, in which Kailash Kher will also perform.

Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers of 20 states will attend the mega event. Diplomats of major countries have also been invited. BJP leaders and workers from other states who campaigned in the Delhi elections are also expected to be present on the occasion.

More than 50 film stars and industrialists, will be present. Besides, Farmers of Delhi, beneficiaries of central government schemes including laadli sisters, and common people from Delhi will also be invited to the ceremony.

The spiritual leaders of the country will be represented by Baba Ramdev, Swami Chidananda, Baba Bageshwar Dhirendra Shastri and other religious figures.

There, however, is no word on who is going to get the top job. Initially it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to France and the US that had delayed a decision. But now, even two days after his return, there has been no announcement, ratcheting up the suspense.

While Parvesh Verma -- the son of former Chief Minister Saheb Singh Verma -- is seen as the front-runner in the race, sources said the list of probables has no less than 15 names that also include candidates for cabinet and the Assembly Speaker.

Nine names will be chosen, sources said, and Delhi will have eight ministers including the Chief Minister.

The 48 BJP MLAs are expected to meet on Wednesday to select their leader, who will succeed Aam Aadmi Party's Atishi.

In the election held earlier this month, the BJP had scripted a massive comeback, winning 48 of the assembly's 70 seats and confining AAP to 22 -- down from 62.

The end to the 10-year rule of AAP came on the heels of massive corruption allegations against its leaders, including then Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. A number of its leaders, including Mr Kejriwal and his then deputy Manish Sisodia -- spent months in jail.

Not just the alleged liquor policy scam, the "Sheesh Mahal" allegations against Mr Kejriwal - the Rs 33.6 crore revamp that that turned the official residence of the Chief Minister into an opulent bungalow suitable for the uber-rich - appeared to have taken the sheen off AAP that thrived on its governance records for the better part of the last decade.

"We Focus Only On Hindu Society Because...": Mohan Bhagwat

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday emphasised the importance of uniting Hindu society, calling it the country's "responsible" community and stating that it views unity as an embodiment of diversity.

Addressing an RSS programme at SAI Ground in Bardhaman, he said, "People often ask why we focus only on Hindu society, and my answer is that the country's responsible society is Hindu society." "Today is not a special event. Those unaware of the Sangh often wonder what it wants. If I had to answer, I would say the Sangh seeks to organise Hindu society because it is the responsible society of the country," Bhagwat said.

He also stressed the importance of accepting the world's diversity.

"Bharatvarsha is not just a geographical entity; its size may expand or shrink over time. It is called Bharatvarsha when it embodies a unique nature. Bharat has its intrinsic character. Those who felt they could not live in harmony with this nature created their own separate countries," he said.

"Naturally, those who remained wanted Bharat's essence to endure. And what is this essence? It is much older than August 15, 1947. It is Hindu society, which flourishes by embracing the world's diversity. This nature accepts and moves forward with the world's diversities. There is one eternal truth that never changes," he added.

He underscored that the foundation of Hindu society rests on its ability to embrace diversity, a principle encapsulated in the Sanskrit phrase 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is one family).

"We say 'unity in diversity,' but Hindu society understands that diversity itself is unity," the RSS chief added.

"What does the Sangh want to do? If this question has to be answered in a sentence, then the Sangh wants to unite the entire Hindu society. Why unite the Hindu society? Because the society responsible for this country is the Hindu society...Bharat has a nature, and those who thought they could not live with that nature, they made their own separate country...Hindus move forward by accepting the diversity of the world...", he added.

Bhagwat said in India, no one remembers the emperors and maharajas, but instead remembers a king who went into exile for 14 years to fulfil his father's promise - an apparent reference to Lord Ram, and the person who placed his brother's sandals on the throne, and who handed over the kingdom upon his return.

"These characteristics define India. Those who follow these values are Hindus and they keep the diversity of the entire country united," he explained.

Reiterating the need for Hindu unity, Bhagwat said even in good times, challenges will arise.

"The nature of the problem is irrelevant; what matters is how prepared we are to face them," he added.

The rally was held after the Calcutta High Court approved it after the Bengal police initially refused permission.

Speaking on historical invasions dating back to Alexander, Bhagwat noted that "a handful of barbarians, who were not superior in virtue, ruled over India, "attributing it to internal betrayal within society".

The RSS chief emphasised that societal participation is necessary to change the destiny of a nation.

He emphasised that India was not created by the British and argued that the notion of India being disunited was instilled in people by them.

He remarked, "Even Mahatma Gandhi had once said that it was the British who tried to teach us that they created India, and he had said that this was wrong. India has existed for centuries - diverse, yet united. All those who live in this country believe in this idea of unity in diversity. Today, if we talk about this, we are accused of talking about Hindutva." As the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) marks a century since its inception in 1925, Bhagwat addressed a gathering, reflecting on the organisation's journey and purpose.

"Sangh is a big organisation spread across the country with about 70,000 shakhas," Bhagwat said, acknowledging the sheer scale of the RSS.

"We are called the biggest organisation in the world. But why do we want to grow? Not for our own sake. Even if our name is not there, it does not matter, but if society is united, it will help the country and the world." He reiterated that the core mission of the RSS is to bring people together.

"The only task for the RSS is to unite society," he said, urging people to engage with the organisation firsthand.

"My appeal is to understand Sangh, come within its fold. There is no fee for this. No membership is required. You can come here at your will and leave if you do not like," he assured.

Bhagwat acknowledged that understanding the RSS takes time, as its only goal is uniting the entire "Hindu samaj" (Hindu society) to develop "atmiyata", a close emotional bond.

He encouraged individuals to interact with the organisation directly rather than forming opinions from a distance.

"Mistakes and misunderstandings develop when people try to understand the organisation from a distance. Come in close contact with the Sangh, see it for yourself," he said.

Assam Orders Probe Against Pak National "Linked" To Congress MP's Wife

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday ordered the registration of a case against a Pakistani national, who is believed to have links with Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's wife, for "trying to interfere in domestic matters" of the state and the country.

Mr Sarma also said that Elizabeth Colburn, Mr Gogoi's wife, will also be probed over her alleged links with Pakistan and its intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Besides, she will also be investigated over her alleged participation in the Lok Sabha election campaigns despite being a British citizen.

The erstwhile Kaliabor constituency was won by Mr Gogoi twice, from 2014 till 2024.

The developments that took place during a cabinet meeting came a day after Mr Gogoi threatened to approach court over Mr Sarma and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s accusations against his wife.

There was no immediate reaction from the Congress leader on Mr Sarma's latest comment but earlier in the day, he said he does not want to get involved in "dirty and baseless" politics. He had also rejected the charges as "laughable and entertaining" in the past.

Addressing a press conference after the cabinet meeting, Mr Sarma said: "Multiple news reports, social media posts and other information in the public domain have surfaced regarding certain comments made by a Pakistan national, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, aimed at disrupting communal harmony in Assam. Given the broader national security implications of this issue, particularly in Assam, the state cabinet has directed the DGP to register a case against Sheikh under appropriate provisions of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) and other relevant laws."

The Chief Minister also alleged that an assessment of Mr Sheikh's social media activity and information available in the public domain shows he has been in contact with Ms Colburn.

"Apart from his engagements with Government of Pakistan, Ali Sheikh has also founded LEAD Pakistan, a non-profit organisation working in the field of climate change. Elizabeth Gogoi was an integral part of LEAD Pakistan during her time spent in Islamabad. Both Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi have been a part of global climate action group called the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) which operates in both India and Pakistan," he said.

In light of these facts and given the historical attempts of Pakistani state and non-state actors to destabilise Assam, the state government took Mr Sheikh's attempts to interfere in the domestic matters of the state and India with utmost seriousness, he added.

A controversy erupted on February 12 when BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia alleged that Ms Colburn shared ties with the ISI while she worked with the Climate and Knowledge Development Network in Islamabad under Mr Sheikh, a former advisor to the Planning Commission of Pakistan.

Mr Sarma, without naming Mr Gogoi, also raised similar accusations the same day, prompting a sharp retort from the Congress leader. He counter attacked with a movie reference. "If Salman Khan's wife can be an ISI agent like in 'Tiger Zinda Hai', then I must be a RAW agent too," Mr Gogoi said.

On Saturday, Mr Sarma said a police case is likely to be registered and a Special Investigation Team be constituted to probe into the allegations against the opposition leader's wife.

The Chief Minister alleged that after Ms Colburn married Mr Gogoi, Mr Sheikh must have gained access to the Chief Minister's Office.

He also alleged that Mr Gogoi's visit to the Pakistan embassy has been confirmed. "In the Lok Sabha, the MP asked questions on nuclear radars, uranium mines in Meghalaya and other such sensitive matters. What was the need to know such things by an Assam MP? I hope he and his wife will cooperate in the probe, otherwise they will be summoned," he said.

Mr Sarma also alleged that Ms Colburn campaigned for her husband prior to two Lok Sabha elections in Kaliabor constituency.

"How could a British national take part in Indian elections? She was directly involved with the election process and we can see old TV clippings. That means she violated visa norms. If so, the Indian government should examine it and revoke her visa," he said.

The Chief Minister said when he meets Union Home Minister Amit Shah the next time, he will discuss how the state government's proactiveness can be synergised with central agencies.

It looks like Mr Gogoi is just an actor, and not the director, in the entire system, Mr Sarma said. "Maybe, he is trapped unintentionally. So, we will examine the matter with a sympathetic outlook. We don't want to accuse him at this moment," he said.

"The way London, America and Islamabad are involved, he may be blackmailed also, who knows about it? Therefore, the entire subject requires serious deep investigation," he added.

Mr Sarma said he will submit "all documents" to state Congress President Bhupen Borah, so that they can verify the facts themselves. "Perhaps, the Congress is unaware of the full picture," he said.

"When the case is investigated, I will write a letter to Borah to inform him about the background and the reasons behind our decision to pursue the matter. The letter I will give to the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and Home Minister (Amit Shah) will also be given to INC chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Borah. This is a matter of national security," he said.

Earlier in the day, Mr Gogoi said that instead of getting involved in "dirty and baseless" politics, the Congress is working on how to give a new economy, social order, education and health policy to Assam. "I have no objection to that if he (Mr Sarma) wants to spend the next 12 months like this only. I am grateful for that," the Congress leader said.

How Tabu Reacted On Seeing Ajay-Kajol's Daughter Nysa For The First Time

Not only do Ajay Devgn and Tabu share a lovely chemistry on screen, but the two have been friends for the longest time, and share a great camaraderie off the screen too.

An old video of Tabu has now been shared by one of her fan pages, where the actress is heard talking about her first reaction when she saw Ajay Devgn and Kajol's daughter Nysa.

In the old interview clip, Tabu said, "Ajay ki shaadi hui thi, aur uski beti hui thi. Mujhe laga 'yeh baap ban gaya hai?' (Ajay had gotten married, and then he had a daughter. I thought, 'He has become a father?'), I still could not come to terms with that."

She added, "Aur phir maine Nysa ko dekha tha Fanaa ki shooting mein. Woh aayi thi. Bohot chhoti thi wo. Aur mujhe use dekh kar aankhon mein aaansu aagye the ki, 'Oh my god, this is my friend's daughter (And then I saw Nysa during the shooting of Fanaa. She had come there. She was very little. And seeing her, my eyes welled up thinking, 'Oh my god, this is my friend's daughter')."

The 2006 film Fanaa had Kajol and Aamir Khan in the lead. Nysa was born on April 20, 2003, and she was only 3 years old when Tabu met her.

Tabu further added that Nysa looked exactly like Ajay Devgn.

She said,  "Yeh jaise chalti hai, yeh jaise baat krti hai, toh my mother was like, 'My God, yeh toh uski carbon copy hai!' (The way she walks, the way she talks, my mother was like, 'My God, she is his carbon copy!')"

Speaking about her bond with Ajay Devgn, Tabu shared,  "I have known Ajay since we were like 12 or 13. He is my brother's childhood friend. So we kind of grew up together. I don't know him through films. I think that's why the equation is different."

Tabu and Ajay Devgn have worked in several films together—namely Vijaypath (1994), Drishyam (2015), Golmaal Again (2017), De De Pyaar De (2019), Drishyam 2 (2022). Their last film together was Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha (2024).

Russia Has Got Unilateral Concessions Upfront From US: Top Defence Expert

After Donald Trump announced his plans to initiate peace talks between  Russia and Ukraine following his phone calls with leaders of the respective countries, US Vice President JD Vance met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Friday and said Washington is targeting a "durable and lasting peace" in Ukraine.

NDTV spoke to the defence editor of The Economist, Shashank Joshi, one of the closest observers of the ongoing war, to understand how the peace talks are likely to progress as well as their larger geopolitical ramifications.

To a question on where Russia stands on the deal, Mr Joshi replied, "So far, the good news for the Russians is that they have had a series of unilateral concessions upfront from the Americans - No NATO membership in Ukraine, no US support for European troops in Ukraine and no NATO Article 5 support for those troops."

Article 5 of US-led NATO provides that if an ally is the victim of an armed attack, every other member of the alliance will consider this act of violence an armed attack against all members and will take the actions it deems necessary to assist the ally attacked.

Mr Joshi said Trump saying we should have Russia back in the G7 has made Kremlin "delighted". However, Mr Joshi said at the Munich Security Conference, "JD Vance will deliver a message that says to the Russians as well if you don't play nice, we can also up the pressure on you."

To a question on what lies for Ukraine in the US-brokered deal, he said, They recognise they're not going to get Crimea back. For them, what is more, important than getting Donetsk, Luhansk and Donbas back is the security guarantee. He said for Ukraine, territory is not the core of the discussion, even though it is profoundly important to them but how to ensure Russia never invades them again will be central to the peace deal.

After meeting the Ukrainian President, US Vice President JD Vance said, "We want the war to come to a close, we want the killing to stop, but we want to achieve a durable, lasting peace, not the kind of peace that's going to have Eastern Europe in conflict just a couple years down the road."

Zelensky called it a "good conversation", saying the encounter with Vance was "our first meeting, not last, I'm sure". "We are ready to move as quickly as possible towards a real and guaranteed peace," Zelensky wrote later on X, adding that an envoy from Washington would visit Kyiv.

Options For Ukraine?

The defence expert said it would leave Zelensky casting around some other options. He said "The Americans seem to be ruling out NATO membership, although, with Trump, you never say never," adding that he "wouldn't rule out the option of European troops in Ukraine as the French are pushing for it."

Earlier, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth appeared to rule out Ukraine joining NATO or retaking all of its territory.

Despite scepticism from some countries, the option of European troops in Ukraine is on the table, Mr Joshi said.

"But I think we're probably heading towards the third option, which is we are not going to give you Article 5 NATO-type security guarantees that say we will come to your aid and intervene, but we will arm you very heavily with billions of dollars worth of weapons so you can defend yourself against Russia," he added.

Political Implication On Zelensky?

Mr Joshi said Zelensky is in trouble since he is struggling politically inside Ukraine and the Americans are pushing the idea of early elections, which also "horrifies" many in the Ukrainian opposition who know this would be "exploited by the Russians".

"If a bad deal is imposed on Zelensky by the US on the pain of withdrawal of aid, the Ukrainian President could find himself in a difficult spot and could face grave political difficulty and his government could fall. We could see a protest, and dissent from the Ukrainian armed forces as well," he added.

European nations are worried about being frozen out of talks to end the war, Mr Joshi said, adding that "the great worry for them is that Trump will begin talking to the Russians before he has even spoken to the Ukrainians and them."

Speaking earlier in the day, JD Vance said, "Of course, they should be at the table". He added, however, that European nations needed to share more of the burden for Europe's defence.

The president is not going to go in this (the peace talks) with blinders on," Vance was quoted as saying in the Wall Street Journal. "He's going to say, 'Everything is on the table, let's make a deal,'" US Vice President added.

Zelensky has played down the fear that Trump was leaving Kyiv in the cold and said the US President had given him his personal number when they spoke.

"If he will choose our side, and if he will not be in the middle, I think he will pressure and he will push Putin to stop the war," Zelensky said.

Kyiv has held talks over granting access to its rare mineral deposits in return for future US security support in a bid to keep the US close

Mexico Threatens US With Legal Action If Cartels Declared Terror Group

Mexico's president on Friday warned US gunmakers they could face fresh legal action and be deemed accomplices if Washington designates Mexican cartels as terrorist groups.

"If they declare these criminal groups as terrorists, then we'll have to expand our US lawsuit," Claudia Sheinbaum said at a daily press conference.

A new charge could include alleged "complicity" of gunmakers with terror groups, she said.

Sheinbaum said the US Justice Department itself has recognized that "74 percent of the weapons" used by criminal groups in Mexico come from north of the border.

On Thursday, the New York Times reported that the US State Department plans to classify criminal groups from Mexico, Colombia, El Salvador and Venezuela as "terrorist organizations."

Mexico has already filed a lawsuit in the United States against US arms manufacturers and vendors, claiming $10 billion in damages for their alleged role in criminal violence in the country.

Earlier this month, Sheinbaum angrily rejected an accusation by the United States that her government has an alliance with drug cartels.

"We categorically reject the slander made by the White House against the Mexican government about alliances with criminal organizations," the president wrote on social platform X at the time.

"If there is such an alliance anywhere, it is in the US gun shops that sell high-powered weapons to these criminal groups," she added.

Tensions between the closely connected neighbors soared after the White House said Trump would slap tariffs of 25 percent on both Mexican and Canadian goods because of illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

The threatened tariffs have since been halted for 30 days.

Bacteria-Based Cellulose Bandage Speeds Up Plant Healing and Growth

A specialised form of cellulose produced by bacteria has been found to enhance wound healing and regeneration in plants. Research indicates that when applied as a bandage to plant wounds, this bacterial cellulose significantly improves recovery rates, potentially offering new solutions for agricultural applications. The material, already used in medical treatments for humans, has shown effectiveness in boosting the natural regenerative processes of plants. Scientists are exploring its possible role in improving grafting techniques, preserving cut plant materials, and accelerating root development in laboratory settings.

Cellulose Bandage Enhances Plant Recovery

According to research published in Science Advances, bacterial cellulose patches were tested on the leaves of Nicotiana benthamiana and Arabidopsis thaliana to assess their role in plant healing. The study found that over 80 percent of treated wounds had completely healed within a week, whereas fewer than 20 percent of untreated wounds showed similar recovery. Microscopic analysis indicated that wounds covered with the bacterial cellulose bandage displayed healthier tissue structures, while untreated ones exhibited dehydration and stress symptoms.

Improved Plant Regeneration Observed

Experiments also revealed that bacterial cellulose facilitated faster regeneration in plant cuttings. In laboratory trials, plant segments placed on bacterial cellulose patches developed roots and leaves more quickly than those left untreated or those placed on patches made from plant-derived cellulose. This observation suggests that bacterial cellulose provides a distinct advantage in vegetative propagation, an essential process in plant research and agriculture.

Presence of Plant Hormones in Cellulose Identified

Chemical analysis detected the presence of plant hormones within the bacterial cellulose, likely secreted by the bacteria responsible for its synthesis. Despite sterilisation procedures meant to prevent contamination, these hormones remained bioactive. Núria Sánchez Coll, a plant biologist at the Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics in Barcelona, told Science News that the cellulose structure's density may have preserved these hormones, allowing them to retain their biological function.

Distinct Genetic Response to Bacterial Cellulose

The study also found that bacterial cellulose triggered a unique genetic response in plants, differing from standard wound healing processes. Specific genes associated with healing were suppressed, while others linked to infection resistance were activated. Researchers believe this response may be influenced by the presence of bacterial hormones and the plant's defensive reaction to the bacterial cellulose.

Potential Applications in Agriculture

Anna Roig, a materials scientist at the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona, stated in Science News that while bacterial cellulose has been widely used in human medicine, this study marks the first time its direct biological effects on plants have been documented. Javier Agustí, a plant scientist at the Institute for Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology in Valencia, emphasised in Science News that further research on real crops is necessary to evaluate its practical applications. Early findings indicate that bacterial cellulose could be beneficial for grafting, improving plant tissue preservation, and serving as a growth medium in laboratory environments. Research groups are now investigating whether similar processes could enhance other plant regeneration mechanisms.

Bihar Teacher Allegedly Asks Student To Be His Girlfriend, Cites Ekalavya

A village in Bihar is witnessing a massive row after a teacher at a school asked a girl student to become his "girlfriend" as "honorarium". No police case has been filed despite the girl complaining to the school. The school authorities have complained to the state Education Department, but no action has been taken against the teacher yet.

Vikas Kumar -- a teacher of Kisan High School in Kisanganj district -- had called up the student of Class 12 and harassed her multiple times. He even proposed that the two of them go to Siliguri, and made vulgar suggestions, the girl has alleged.

He cited the example of Mahabharat's archer Ekalavya, who had parted with the thumb of his right hand to please Dronacharya, whom he considered his teacher. Why can't his student follow this example and become his girlfriend, he had questioned, she has alleged.

Incensed, the girl had informed her teachers and made a formal complaint against him at the school.

Sources said the teacher had even made similar propositions to a woman teacher of the school to whom he is now married.

Now that a complaint was filed, headmaster Shafiq Ahmed informed the District Education Office. But the Education Office took no action other than calling for an explanation from Vikar Kumar.

The teacher is yet to reply and is serving as an invigilator in the Matriculation examination at a private school in Kishanganj.

Asked about the allegations against him, he refused to respond.

The lack of action infuriated the villagers, who held a dharna outside the school yesterday. The police had to be called in to deal with the situation.

Asked about the matter, the District Magistrate said they are taking the matter seriously. "After investigation, action would be taken," he said.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Reveals How He Uses AI In His Daily Life

You might assume that top AI executives use artificial intelligence in highly sophisticated ways, but that's not necessarily the case. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, for example, primarily relies on AI for everyday tasks like summarizing emails and documents.

"I use [AI] in the boring ways," Altman said on Wharton psychologist Adam Grant's ReThinking podcast last month. "I use it for like, 'Help me process all of this email' or 'Help me summarize this document.'"

Altman isn't alone. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang uses AI chatbots to help draft written content, as he mentioned at a Wired event in December. Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella takes advantage of Outlook's AI features to organize and prioritize his inbox, he said at the Fast Company Innovation Festival 2024.

Despite leading the AI industry, these executives' personal use of AI mirrors that of many professionals. According to a Gallup survey from last year, the most common uses of AI chatbots include idea generation, information consolidation, and automating routine tasks.

The Future of AI: From Assistants to Agents

Altman acknowledges that AI's impact across industries is still evolving. In a January blog post, he pointed to AI "agents" as the next big step- models capable of handling multi-step tasks with minimal user input.

OpenAI took a step in this direction with Operator, a ChatGPT feature launched last month that can automate tasks like vacation planning, filling out forms, making reservations, and ordering groceries. Other tech giants, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Anthropic, are also developing similar AI-powered agents, CNBC Make It reported.

"Imagine that this agent will eventually be capable of doing most things a software engineer at a top company with a few years of experience could do," Altman wrote. However, he noted that these agents won't be flawless-they'll need human supervision, struggle with some tasks, and won't be the source of groundbreaking new ideas.

For now, AI adoption in workplaces remains relatively low. A January report from McKinsey & Company found that only about 13% of U.S. employees currently use AI at work. But as AI agents become more capable, that number could rise-potentially changing how people across industries interact with technology in their daily routines.
