Why France Is Protesting And What The "Block Everything" Movement Means

French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Sebastien Lecornu as the country's fifth prime minister in less than two years, following the resignation of Francois Bayrou.

Lecornu is set to take office on Wednesday just as France saw widespread protests led by a left-wing grassroots movement known as "Block Everything" (Bloquons tout). Analysts say Lecornu faces a baptism of fire, faced with a twin challenge - managing a politically fractured parliament and a highly mobilised public against the government's spending cuts and austerity measures.

In Rennes, demonstrators set a bus on fire and caused damage to a power line in the southwest. Around 200 arrests have taken place so far, authorities said.

What Is The "Block Everything" Movement?

The "Block Everything" collective is a citizen-led movement calling for boycott, civil disobedience, and solidarity in response to government policies. Unlike traditional strikes led by unions or political parties, the movement is independent, organised primarily through social media platforms such as X, TikTok, Telegram, and Facebook.

Supporters are using hashtags like #10septembre2025 and #10septembre to spread their message, encouraging actions such as:

  • Boycotting major retailers like Carrefour, Amazon, and Auchan.
  • Withdrawing money from banks
  • Peaceful occupation of symbolic sites like town halls.
  • Organising neighbourhood assemblies and strike funds.

Although the protests did not fully achieve their self-declared goal of "blocking everything," they caused widespread disruption and showed growing public anger.

Why Are People Protesting?

The immediate trigger is Francois Bayrou's 2026 budget, which proposes:

  • Cutting 43.8 million Francs from the national budget
  • Reducing the country's deficit
  • Removing two national holidays
  • Freezing pensions
  • Slashing 5 billion Francs from healthcare

Who Supports It And Who Doesn't?

  • Supporters: Predominantly left-wing voters, with 69 per cent of surveyed supporters having voted for former parliamentarian Jen-Luc Melenchon in the 2022 election.
  • Opposition: Major unions have largely refused to participate, citing alternative strike dates (September 18). Only the hard-left CGT union is formally backing the protests.

Even before September 10, the protests caused significant disruption across the country. Demonstrators attempted to block highways in Bordeaux, while a cable fire in Toulouse affected rail traffic. Early actions in Paris led to 75 arrests, and the highway operator Vinci reported blockages in Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes, and Lyon.

To manage the unrest, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau confirmed that 80,000 security personnel had been deployed nationwide.

Why Francois Bayrou Resigned

Nine months into his term after failing to secure support in the National Assembly for his deficit-cutting budget, Francois Bayrou quit the PM's office. He had replaced Michel Barnier, who also stepped down in December after losing a no-confidence vote.

With no clear solution to the parliamentary deadlock, some parties, including far-right leader Marine Le Pen, called for fresh elections.

Could a Planet Exist Without a Host Star? Astronomers Say Rogue Worlds May Roam Freely

Astronomers have discovered that planets can survive without stars, drifting as rogue or hypervelocity worlds. Some are flung into space by black holes, while others are displaced by gas giants. On some of these rogue worlds, the idea goes, there might be oceans beneath icy crusts, where life, at least life at a microbe level, could exist.

Shashi Tharoor Urges Caution On Trump's "New Tone" On India-US Ties

Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's response to US President Donald Trump on the India-US relationship, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday stated that while PM Modi was very quick to respond, there was some serious repair work that needed to be done by the governments and diplomats of both countries.

Welcoming this "new tone" with a spirit of caution, Mr Tharoor stated one could not forgive the hurt and offence caused by Trump so quickly, keeping in mind the consequences Indians faced.

"The Prime Minister was very quick to respond, and the Foreign Minister has also underscored the importance of the basic relationship that is a comprehensive global strategic partnership, which is still there. And that message is an important message for us to give... I think there's some serious repair work that needs to be done by governments and diplomats on both sides. I would welcome this new tone with a spirit of caution. One can't just forget and forgive so quickly because there are real consequences that Indians are facing on the ground, and those consequences need to be overcome...," Mr Tharoor told ANI.

He further stated that the tariffs imposed by Trump had consequences on the people, which could not be completely forgotten.

"I don't think we can just completely forget either the 50 per cent tariffs or the insults that have accompanied it from both the President and his staff.... Mr Trump has a fairly mercurial temperament, and what he has been saying has caused some hurt and offence in our country. The 50 per cent tariffs have actually had consequences already..." he further added.

Earlier on Friday (local time), President Trump called the India-US ties a "very special relationship" and affirmed that he and PM Modi would always be friends, asserting that there is "nothing to worry about".

PM Modi responded warmly to Trump's remarks and his positive assessment of the bilateral relations.

"Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump's sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership," the Prime Minister said in a post on X.

Responding to the US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's comments concerning India's trade ties with Russia, Mr Tharoor stated that India behaved with a great deal of maturity.

"I don't think we have anything to say sorry about at all. India has behaved with a great deal of maturity on all of this," Mr Tharoor said.

Further, the Congress MP stated that India had been encouraged to purchase Russian oil to stabilise oil prices.

"Also, don't forget that trade with Russia and oil was actually blessed by previous American administrations; they requested us to buy some Russian oil to stabilise global oil prices. Secondly, China buys more Russian oil and gas than we do. Turkey buys more Russian oil and gas than we do. Europe doesn't buy oil and gas, but they buy other Russian items, so they're putting more billions of dollars into Russia's kitty than we do," Mr Tharoor stated.

Mr Tharoor stated that while there had been an error in the American policies against India, which was not "warranted or justified," he stated that Lutnick has to understand that India is also a sovereign nation, and could take their own decisions.

"It seems bizarre that we are alone being singled out for allegedly financing the Russian war effort when others are doing far more than we are. So I think there has been a certain mistake made in American policy against India, which is not warranted or justified. I do not think India has anything to say sorry for. I think Mr Lutnick has to understand that we are a sovereign nation, just as they are. They can take their own sovereign decisions, we will take our own sovereign decisions," he added.

This comes after Lutnick stated that despite India maintaining a firm position on continuing oil trade with Russia, New Delhi would eventually return to the table to strike a deal with Washington in the coming months.

"It Was In Your Fate": Parmeet On Divya Living In "A Hut Next To A Gutter"

Divya Khossla is currently gearing up for the release of her upcoming film, Ek Chatur Naar. Directed by Umesh Shukla, the film also features Neil Nitin Mukesh in a lead role. While the actress plays a girl who lives in a slum in Lucknow, Neil portrays a rich businessman.

During her appearance in Archana Puran Singh's vlog, Divya revealed that she lived in a slum for nearly a month for her role in Ek Chatur Naar. The actress said, "I didn't know the UP language, but I learnt it and practised it at home. Later, our director made me live in a slum for almost a month."

Director Umesh added, "There is this place called Badshah Nagar in Lucknow, that is where we shot this film. It is a real slum." Sharing how her jhopdi (hut) was right next to a ganda naala (gutter), Divya said, "I eventually got used to the bad smell."

The filmmaker mentioned how he had to trick his actors into filming scenes at certain locations. He shared, "Sometimes, we didn't even tell our actors where was their next shot. The naala scene that we made Divya do, we didn't inform her about the location. We just took her there and made her stand there."

Recalling the experience, Divya stated, "Oh My God! It was an open naala, I was standing at the verge of the naala. I was this close to falling in there. I was extremely scared. They made me do everything, including Jhadu, katka, pocha sab." To which Parmeet jokingly replied, “When you are fated to do a certain thing, life makes sure to make you do all that in some or the other way, irrespective of who you are.”

Further in the vlog, Umesh revealed how one of Divya's monologues in the film was improvised by her. He said, "Divya surprised me with a huge monologue, which is now getting extremely popular. I have no idea from where did she work that out."

Elaborating on it, Divya shared, "As soon as I signed the film, I began to watch videos of influencers from Uttar Pradesh to understand the kind of slang they use. Then later, I also summoned all our staffs who are from office, and interacted with them. I asked them to teach me a couple of cuss words."

Ek Chatur Naar follows the story of a witty but seemingly innocent woman. Things get complicated when she and her mischievous antics stumble upon a get-rich-quick scheme, leading to a cat-and-mouse game with a man caught in her web of deception. The film is set to release in theatres on September 12.

Tanya's Family Issues Statement Amid Backlash, "Please Keep Us Out Of This"

Bigg Boss 19 has really done what it does best, keeping everyone glued to their screens with drama, tension, and plenty of heated moments. And if there's one contestant who's been at the heart of all the buzz, it's Tanya Mittal.

The social media influencer has been making headlines for her superiority-based statements in the house ever since the show started.

Like every season, the contestants face intense scrutiny from both viewers and social media. Tanya, too, has been at the centre of debates, drawing both criticism and support. Amid the ongoing chatter, her parents have now broken their silence.

In a statement shared by Tanya's team on Instagram, her parents spoke of their "mix of emotions" as they watched Tanya on such a big stage. They said nothing makes them prouder than seeing their daughter shine, but it also pains them to see her being "pulled down" and targeted by those who don't know her.

"We cannot explain the mix of emotions we feel seeing our Tanya on the country's biggest reality show. As parents, nothing makes us prouder than watching her win hearts. But at the same time, nothing hurts more than seeing her being pulled down, made a target, and spoken about so cruelly by people who don't even know her heart."

"To everyone questioning her or throwing allegations, we have only one request: please wait until her journey is complete before passing judgments. She deserves that much. Your reels and allegations may win you attention, but they leave scars that last a lifetime," they added.

Her parents also urged people to "keep us, her family, out of this," adding that the negativity directed at Tanya affects them deeply as well.

"And please... we ask with folded hands, keep us, her family, out of this. This is a very difficult time for us. We never imagined that our daughter, whom we raised with nothing but love, would be subjected to such negativity on such a public stage. Every harsh word cuts us too, in ways you may never understand.

All we can hope is that humanity and kindness prevail. Until then, we continue to stand by our Tanya, with love and faith. We love you, stay strong like the boss we raised you to be," the statement concluded.

Tanya Mittal is an influencer, entrepreneur, podcaster, and former model. With more than 2.5 million followers on Instagram, she is known for sharing motivational content, spiritual stories, and lifestyle posts. She was crowned Miss Asia Tourism 2018 and represented India at the Miss Asia Tourism Universe pageant in Lebanon, where she won recognition on an international level. She is currently winning hearts inside the Bigg Boss house.

Viewers can watch 'Bigg Boss 19' on Colors and JioHotstar.
